Red Deer Reign Capture the 2026 Blackbird Cup

Red Deer Reign Capture the 2026 Blackbird Cup

The 2026 Alberta Pro Roller Hockey League season came to a dramatic conclusion July 3–5 as Alberta’s top teams descended on Millennium Place with one goal in mind: lifting the Blackbird Cup.

After a weekend packed with high-tempo roller hockey, big offensive performances and season-ending elimination games, it was the Red Deer Reign who emerged from the field and finished the job, defeating the Sherwood Park Archers in the championship game to become the 2026 Blackbird Cup Champions.

Reign Make an Immediate Statement

Red Deer wasted absolutely no time announcing its championship intentions.

The Reign opened their playoff campaign against the defending champion Calgary Outlaws and delivered one of the most dominant performances of the weekend, racing to a 10–1 victory.

Scott Topping and Petrie each recorded hat tricks, while Chris Rauckman and Neufeld added two goals apiece as Red Deer produced an offensive explosion that immediately put the rest of the playoff field on notice.

It was the kind of performance that can change the complexion of a short playoff tournament. From the opening game, Red Deer established itself as a team capable of creating offence in waves and getting production throughout its lineup.

Every Point Matters

With the playoff format leaving little room for error, Saturday's games quickly became critical.

The Fort Saskatchewan Wolfpack picked up one of the weekend's tightest victories with a 3–2 win over the Calgary Outlaws. Conroy and regular-season scoring champion Mark Rassell found the net for Calgary, while Steven Sanche, Rasko and Hookey supplied the Wolfpack goals.

For Calgary, the loss left the defending champions needing results to fall their way to stay alive. Ultimately, the Outlaws were unable to recover from their difficult start and finished the playoff round robin outside of the semifinal positions, ending their bid for back-to-back championships.

Their early exit was one of the biggest stories of the weekend. Calgary had entered the postseason after finishing second overall during the regular season, but the compressed playoff format proved once again that regular-season positioning guarantees nothing once the Blackbird Cup is on the line.

Red Deer Earns the Inside Track

As the round robin unfolded, the Reign continued to separate themselves from the field.

The four-team championship weekend was built around a demanding schedule in which every game carried major consequences, with Sunday's schedule featuring a single semifinal before the Blackbird Cup Final.

Red Deer's work through the preliminary stage earned them the coveted path directly into the championship game, leaving the remaining contenders to fight for the opportunity to join them.

That opportunity ultimately belonged to the Sherwood Park Archers.

The Archers navigated their way through the weekend and survived Sunday's elimination stage to punch their ticket to the championship game, setting up a fitting final between two organizations with a long history of battling one another at the top of Alberta roller hockey.

Reign vs. Archers for the Blackbird Cup

By Sunday afternoon, everything had been reduced to one game.

Red Deer Reign. Sherwood Park Archers. Blackbird Cup on the line.

The championship matchup showcased two of Alberta's premier roller hockey programs and provided the perfect conclusion to a weekend built around the province's top-level talent. The Final was also selected for national television distribution, continuing Alberta Pro Roller Hockey's growing presence through ESPN and TSN.

When the final buzzer sounded, it was the Red Deer Reign standing at the top.

After setting the tone with a 10-goal performance in their first game of the weekend and carrying that momentum through the playoff field, Red Deer completed its run by defeating Sherwood Park and claiming the 2026 Blackbird Cup Championship.
